More transfer news are out and it has been reported that Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill is battling Liverpool for Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour.
Local newspapers have reported that O’Neill has been a long-time admirer of the Standard Liege midfielder who turns 21 this year.
It is believed that he will use the cash raised from the sale of Barry to Manchester City to test the resolve of the Belgian club now that Defour has made it clear he wants to leave.
The player said that he has achieved what he wanted with Standard and added that it is best for his career to make an upward step. The player feels that the time is right to move on. He also added that it is up to the club if they want sell and they will decide that he goes to a good club.
It is believed that Defour made a big impression on Rafa Benitez with European displays against Liverpool for Standard last August and Benitez has made him a priority if Xabi Alonso or Javier Mascherano leave Anfield this summer.
