Sensational transfer news are out and it has been reported that Martin O’Neill is considering a surprise move to sign Sol Campbell on a free.
It is believed that the Aston Villa boss needs an experienced centre-back after seeing Martin Laursen, 31, retire through injury and Campbell is seen as the perfect replacement.
It is now believed that Campbell, 34, has been offered a new deal to stay at Portsmouth on reduced wages of around £40,000 a week but the prospect of playing Europa League football with Aston Villa next season is the big pull.
It is also believed that O’Neill has always favoured dominant central defenders but his current crop of Curtis Davies, Zat Knight and Carlos Cuellar do not fall into that category.
Villa are also reportedly closing in on highly-rated Arsenal teenager Samir Carruthers who plays as a winger and was the captain of the Gunners’ Under-16 side.
Villa Academy director Bryan Jones said that the player was offered a new contract by Arsenal and he turned it down.
He also added that Aston Villa were given permission by Arsenal to speak to him and that Villa have agreed a contract in principle and hopefully the player will for Aston Villa on July 1.
