Boca Juniors piled the misery on AC Milan by securing third place at the Audi Cup and extending the Rossoneri’s streak of defeats to five by winning a penalty shoot-out at the Allianz Arena.
Thiago Silva gave Milan the lead in the 27th minute and the Serie A side looked on course for victory until Lucas Viatri equalised three minutes from the end.
Roberto Abbondanzieri then saved the decisive penalty from Pato to earn the Argentinians the win after Andrea Pirlo and Federico Insua had also seen spot-kicks saved.
The Allianz Arena was only half full when Milan and Boca Juniors took to the field for the third-place play-off, and those who had chosen to arrive later for the final between Bayern Munich and Manchester United had probably made the right choice.
