Reports have emerged claiming that England U21 coach Gareth Southgate is convinced by the potential of Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.
Southgate has no concerns about Chambers’ lack of games this season as he insists Arsenal is the best place for him to develop.
“He is important for us,” said Southgate. “At the moment he is in the transition of becoming a central defender from a full back. I still think he can be a very good full back. I don’t think he should rule that out in his mind. The ability to play both roles at that age is important.
“He is at a club that is one of the top two in the country. They have got big Champions League matches, so for him to be anywhere near that is encouraging. He was probably played more last year than he could have expected having just left Southampton.
“Arsene (Wenger) and Steve Bould, I know, always talk to him. They are trying to help him with his game. He is similar to Jesse (Lingard) at Manchester United and Jack (Butland). Sometimes the Under 21s gives players the experience and game time they need.”
