A 2-1 win at Anfiled was not enough to help Liverpool reach the Europa League finals.
Goals from Alberto Aquilani and Yossi Benayoun put the Liverpool on course to reach the finals but 102 minute goal from Atletico striker Diego Forlan was enough to see the visitors through.
Atletico will now face another Premier League side, Fulham FC in the Europa League finals.
