Liverpool were the grateful beneficiaries of no less than three own goals as they hammered Brighton and Hove Albion 6-1 at Anfield to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Liam Bridcutt was unfortunate enough to put the ball into his own net on two occasions, while Lewis Dunk’s accidental strike after 75 minutes was truly bizarre. However, the margin of the scoreline hardly flattered Liverpool, who were in rampant form, particularly in a fantastic second-half performance.
Martin Skrtel headed Kenny Dalglish’s side in front before a brilliant effort from Kazenga LuaLua drew the Championship side level after 17 minutes. Bridcutt beat his own keeper just before the break to restore Liverpool’s advantage before Andy Carroll claimed a well-taken third.
It was then time for Brighton to implode as Bridcutt, again, and Dunk put into their own net and although Luis Suarez saw a penalty saved after being specifically instructed to take it by Dalglish, the Uruguayan rounded off the scoring with five minutes remaining when heading home the sixth.
Liverpool, who play Cardiff City in the Carling Cup final next weekend, now go through to face Stoke City at Anfield in the quarter-finals.
