More than 300,000 fans watched the Red Devils play a handful of matches over a two week period in 2014 which included a friendly with Real Madrid in Michigan that attracted more than 100,000.

As United get set for another pre-season Stateside sojourn, van Gaal acknowledged that the club he now manages is easily one of the biggest in the world.

“That was unbelievable,” he said.

“It was the first few days of my managership in Manchester and the way of the enthusiasm of our fans and the amount of numbers was unbelievable.

“We have played four or five games there (in the US) and there were 300,000 fans in two weeks.
“Of course (in Michigan) they were also watching Real Madrid but most of them were in red shirts. It’s amazing.”

United, who will base themselves in Seattle and San Francisco, will take on European champions Barcelona, Mexican side Club America, French giants Paris Saint-Germain and MLS outfit San Jose Earthquakes during their stay in the States.
