It has been reported that Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has revealed he came close to joining Newcastle United earlier in his career.
The England international striker is supporting an online auction for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, donating an England shirt to mark his international goals haul.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, Arsenal ace Theo Walcott and Sir Alex Ferguson have all contributed items for the auction.
“Sir Bobby Robson was a football man to the core and once tried to sign me for Newcastle,” Rooney told The Mirror.
“I only played against his teams on a few occasions.
“But as England captain, I am aware of his impact as the most successful national team manager since Sir Alf Ramsey.”
