Reports are out claiming that Manchester United have joined Liverpool’s interest in Derby County midfielder Will Hughes.
The Daily Star claims that no offers were received for the England Under-21 international before the summer window closed, but new reports suggest Liverpool will be ready to test the Championship side’s resolve for Hughes, who is also a Manchester United target.
County manager Nigel Clough was surprised that no bids were received before deadline day but knows the top teams are still monitoring Hughes.
He told the Barton Mail: “We were quite surprised, but nicely surprised.
“There is money splashing around in the Premier League at the moment with certain teams.
“In the last few days before the window closed Liverpool spent £25m on a couple of defenders and Arsenal ended up spending around £40m on one player.
“I think Premier League clubs want players for the here and now. They want players who can go into their first team now.
“I think there will be interest in Will in January.
“I think that is when everybody can assess the first six months of the season, where they are going and where they are a bit short.”
