Diego Costa scored the only goal of the game as Premier League champions Chelsea beat Norwich City 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
The Brazil-born Spain international was far from his best against Alex Neil’s side, an angry presence up front seemingly keener on tangling with Norwich defender Sebastien Bassong than getting into the six-yard box, but he came alive just before the midway point of the second half to net the winner.
Norwich switched off after referee Craig Pawson awarded a free-kick in the centre-circle following a Youssouf Mulumbu on Eden Hazard, and Cesc Fabregas showed great speed of thought to float a pass towards the left channel. Costa was quickest to react, and cut inside Ryan Bennett before drilling a shot past Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy.
