Roma travelled to Belgium to take on AA Gent in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie, with a comfortable 3-1 advantage. Avoiding defeat was certain to book their spot in the next phase of the competition, something that they easily managed to achieve.
In fact, the Giallorossi went a few better, and incredibly smashed seven goals past the hapless Belgian outfit, to record a 7-1 victory on the night, and a 10-2 result on aggregate.
The coach Luciano Spalletti was expectedly full of praise for his players after its completion, especially the captain Francesco Totti, who hit a well deserved hat-trick on the night.
“It was a good game, a very good game with great intensity,” Spalletti explained to Goal Italia.
“Obviously we were benefited by our comfortable lead from the first leg, but I was pleased to see us switched on right from the start tonight.
“Totti was brilliant, and he proved his immense quality once again. He does have the ability to strike a winning blow when you least expect it.”
I guess this win might ease the pain of losing by a similar scoreline to Man Utd a little -not!.
