The Wives and girlfriends (WAGS) of English national football players are going to the World Cup in South Africa thanks to their counterparts who destroyed Croatia 5-1 and were truly consistent throughout the group stage so far.
The WAGs had to stay back at home for Euro 2008 but next summer is a different story.
The Bad News
As exciting as it is for the ladies, new England boss ain’t to happy about it, in fact Fabio Capello has said that the WAGs are not welcomed in South Africa 2010:
Fabio Capello has made it clear he will not allow the high-profile wives and girlfriends (WAGS) of his England players to grab centre stage at next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
At the last World Cup, in Germany, the England WAGS were based in a hotel close to England’s training base and the activities of Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and co. generated every bit as much interest from the world’s media as the players did.
There appears no danger of that happening in South Africa with Capello having announced that no special arrangements will be made to accommodate wives and girlfriends, although they will be allowed to see their partners on the days after match days.
“For the whole period we are in South Africa, and I hope it will be long, the players will stay together,” he insisted. “They will be able to meet their wives, girlfriends and families one day after each game.
“We have to play. We are in South Africa to play, not for a holiday.”
