Van Gaal Blames Mounting Injury List For Man Utd Humiliation

Louis van Gaal 45

It has been reported that Louis van Gaal believes his side’s mounting injury list was the cause for Manchester United’s loss to FC Midtjylland on Thursday night.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 by the reigning Danish champions in the Europa League Round of 32 first leg despite taking the lead through Memphis Depay in the 37th minute.

United lost goalkeeper David De Gea during the warm-up, which further contributed to their waning numbers, and van Gaal feels that the club’s current injury woes were the major factor for the humiliating defeat at the hands of a club involved in their first-ever knockout stage of a European tournament.

“When you have a list of 13 injured players and a few minutes before the game we can add another player to the list. Then it is difficult to cope with such a list of injured players,” said the Dutchman.

However, he did praise Jess Thorup’s side who fought back with goals from Pione Sisto and Paul Onuachu.

“But, nevertheless, after 10 or 15 minutes we controlled the match, we scored a goal but we gave also a goal away one minute before half-time. That’s a difficult time to concede a goalm,” he added.

“In the second half, I have to say that Midtjylland was winning every ball. Again, that’s very disappointing, because you know in advance that’s the key of this game.

“They score and when you see how they score it is a little bit unnecessary in my opinion.

United will host Midtjylland at Old Trafford in the return bout next week.
