Reports are out claiming that Louis van Gaal has revealed that Wayne Rooney will not necessarily return to Manchester United’s starting line-up this week.
The Red Devils captain is over the illness that kept him out of Saturday’s win over Watford but that does not mean he is guaranteed a start in Wednesday night’s Champions League meeting with PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford.
When quizzed on Rooney’s return being automatic, van Gaal said: “No, it is not. I think it is always the decision of the manager.
“I always compare players with each other and take into account how fit they are and how they show it on the training sessions.
“(Marouane) Fellaini, Rooney and (Anthony) Martial have to show their fitness on the training ground, and then I have to compare the players who are the best to fit into our game plan.
“Every match it is the same procedure.”
