It has been revealed that Ruud van Nistelrooy is of the belief that teenager Anthony Martial should be the man to lead Manchester United’s attack.
The 19-year-old French international forward arrived from AS Monaco in a much-publicised £36million deal in the summer but former Red Devils star van Nistelrooy does not believe his age or rawness should hold him back.
Van Nistelrooy suggests Martial can be the leading striker for United with captain Wayne Rooney dropping in behind him as Louis van Gaal’s no.10.
“If Martial keeps doing what he did against Liverpool he could be a revelation,” van Nistelrooy said in the wake of Martial’s stunning debut goal on the weekend.
“On the other side is it really realistic to expect that from him? Hopefully for United he can be the one. He looks like the out-and-out striker that is needed.
“Wayne Rooney is playing in that position but I don’t think he is an out-and-out striker.
“Obviously he can fulfil that role and score his goals but it would be a good combination if Martial was up front and Rooney was just off him.
“That would be a good strike force.”
