Reports are out claiming that Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe admits he based his game as a junior on Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
He’d spend hours watching videos of the Arsenal goal machine and even at 33 and with 55 England caps to his name, he is still learning.
“In those days, I thought I was the next Ian Wright,” he said.
“I loved Wrighty and used to watch his movement, his finishing.
“Every night – ask my Mum – I’d eat my dinner and then go straight to my room and watch those videos. I’d get a real buzz and then go into training and pretend I was him.
“A few years later at Tottenham, Clive Allen gave me a DVD of Jimmy Greaves and I noticed there was often no backlift. He’d just poke the ball into the corner so I’d practice that too.”
