How the mighty has fallen!, long time ago an on form and in favour Andrey Arshavin mesmerised the Arsenal faithful and many things were expected of him, the russian arrived at London in 2009 from Zenit St Petersburg, proclaimed ‘Gooner’ status, scored four goals against Liverpool, smashed in a scorcher at Old Trafford, and then proceeded to dip so low on form that even Fabio Capello refused to give him a spot in the Russian team stating:
“Arshavin is a great talent but he has started to fade. I went to see him in London but unfortunately I have to tell you that he is no longer a player that he used to be and I cannot call up a player to the national team unless he is beneficial to the team.”
The out of favour Russian winger has yet to make a single Premier League start this season as Arsene Wenger has grown increasingly frustrated with his inconsistent performances.
Arshavin was linked with a move to Fulham in the January transfer window, however a deal failed to materialise.
And now clubs in Azerbaijan are ready to declare their interest in Arshavin, with Khazar among the favourites to land him.
Yalchin Aliyev, a spokesman of Azerbaijan club Khazar, told Russian paper izvestia.ru: “At the moment there are only four teams in Azerbaijan who could be ready to pay for such a player as Andrey.
“Apart from Khazar it’s Quabala, Neftci and Baki.
“We have a new coach: the popular John Toshack. At the moment he has to check the squad and decide in which positions he should strengthen the team.”
