Lionel Messi has admitted that being named the Player of the World Cup is a hollow feeling after Argentina’s defeat in the final.
The Barcelona superstar was surprisingly named the Golden Ball winner – sponsored by his backers, Adidas.
“Right at this moment the award is not important to me. I don’t care. We had wanted to win the trophy and celebrate with everyone back home in Argentina,” Messi told reporters in the Mixed Zone after the game.
“After the game we put in, we deserved a little more. It’s painful to end on the losing side after playing like we did because we were so close to the penalty shoot-out. It’s been a while since Argentina has got this far – we haven’t got past the quarter-finals in other editions. We’re upset at not being able to win the game, and there will be a lot of people giving us a hard time about it.
“Germany had control of the ball but we created the best chances. We were a little unlucky not to have put those chances away,” he continued. “We had three clear attempts: mine, El Pipa’s and Rodrigo’s but the ball didn’t go in. Now we have to look forward to the future.”
