Koeman Insists Southampton Deserved More From Man Utd Meeting

Ronald Koeman believes Southampton should have got something more out of Monday night’s clash with Manchester United.

The Saints were beaten 2-1 at home by the Red Devils after making a pair of errors to allow Robin van Persie a match-winning double.

Jose Fonte’s horribly under-hit backpass invited the Dutch striker to open the scoring in the 12th minute before Graziano Pelle netted his seventh goal of the season for the Saints just after the half-hour mark.

The former Arsenal striker then came up with the winner in the 71st minute when he got on the end of Wayne Rooney’s deep free-kick which prompted the following reaction from Koeman.

“I think so (we deserved more) because we played our style, our way of playing,” said the Dutchman who came up against Louis van Gaal for the first time since the pair fell out a decade ago.

“That means that we don’t like to play the long ball, we like to play football, to have good ball possession.

“We like to press our opponent very early. We did everything.

“We create chances but we did as well mistakes and maybe they did more mistakes than we did but they have players who handle that kind of mistakes and that was the difference.

“About football, about chances, I think we deserved more.

“I said to my players ‘it’s easy in my opinion, we lost not against Man United tonight, we lost by ourselves.’”

The defeat was Southampton’s third in a row which saw them slip to fifth on the Premier League table while United moved up to third on the back of a five-game winning streak.
