According to a report by Italian Journalist Emanuele Guilianelli, Chelsea are ready to make an offer of £20 million to AS Roma for the signature of highly rated centre defender Antonio Rudiger. Only last week AS Roma announced that they have taken up the option of signing the German permanently after a year loan spell at the club. Although Guilianelli is not known to be overly reliable, the fact that Online Soccer Betting sites have stopped taking odds on the German joining Chelsea is telling.

The 23-year-old defender was linked with Chelsea last summer but Roma won the race for the player choosing to take him on loan first with an option to buy. He formed a formidable partnership in the centre of Roma’ defense alongside another Chelsea target Kostas Manolas. He played in 37 games games for Roma last season in all competition and alongside Manolas were regarded as the best defensive pairing in the Serie A.

According to Emanuele Guilianelli Chelsea have already opened talks with Roma for the player and they are confident a deal can be done. The Blues are said to be keen on getting the deal done and dusted before the start of the European Championship on the 10th of June, next week.

Emanuele Guilianelli who previously worked with fourfourtwo, Gazzetta dello Sport, the Guardian among other reputable media houses wrote on his twitter page yesterday; “Chelsea decisive move for Rüdiger. Blues ready to offer about €27mln to Roma, 5 years deal for the player.”

This report is true means Chelsea have dropped their interested in the more expensive Kostas Manolas or maybe Arsenal who have been keenly linked with the player have managed to beat the Blues in the race for his signature.

However, if Chelsea get Rudiger, they will be getting themselves a very good centre back and on the cheap for that matter. By signing him now, Chelsea are not only making preparation in advance for when Terry will leave the club after the end of next season but also getting in a player good enough to step into the big shoes of John Terry should the skipper lose form or be injured during the season.

Also, by bringing in the player now rather than waiting till next summer, Chelsea are removing the risk of losing the player to other big clubs. If he does well in the Serie A next season again, he is certainly going to command interest from other clubs which will only lead to a bidding war which Chelsea won’t want.
