The Daily Express reported that Rodriguez, who helped himself to six goals and two assists in Brazil, is believed to have his heart set on a move to Champions League winners Real Madrid, but Louis Van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers are keen to offer him an alternative path.

Reports in Spain claim that Madrid have struck a verbal agreement with the player’s agent, and it is now down to the La Liga giants to negotiate a fee with Monaco.

Real’s move for Rodriguez will only happen if they are able to sell Angel Di Maria, who also a target for Man Utd.

The Red Devils could prefer to sign Rodriguez due to his age and versatility in midfield, and after the club struck a record £750million kit deal with Adidas, Van Gaal has the funds to make the move happen.
