Sydney FC Not Interested In Signing Man Utd Defender Rio Ferdinand

Reports are out claiming that Sydney FC have denied claims that they are set to go after Rio Ferdinand.

Rio Ferdinand

The 35-year old former England international has ended his 12-year career with Manchester United after it became apparent that the Old Trafford club were not going to offer him a new deal.

Ferdinand is out of contract in June and will certainly not be a Red Devils player next season but he will also not be making his way to Sydney as a big-name replacement for Alessandro Del Piero.

Sky Blues CEO Tony Pignata confirmed to AAP that his club were not in pursuit of Ferdinand who won six Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy with United.

“He’s a great player and has had a great career … but probably not a player that we would be looking at to be honest,” Pignata said.

“From my understanding, from what I’ve read, he’s still keen to stay in the EPL – and he’s probably good enough to keep playing in the EPL.”

He added: “Generally, if you go for a marquee, you want someone probably in the front third.”
