Manchester United overcame another goalkeeping error by David De Gea to open their Premier League title defence with a 2-1 win against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
A late Steven Reid own-goal gave United the points after Shane Long had cancelled out Wayne Rooney’s early strike.
The win came at a heavy cost for United, who lost Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to injury, while De Gea’s confidence looked rock-bottom after his blunder allowed Long’s tame shot to trickle past him.
Nonetheless, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are the first championship contenders to register a win on a weekend when Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all drew. Manchester City play on Monday night.
